The Kimberly Crest House was built in 1897 and is a well-preserved example of Victorian Chateau architecture. In 1969, as part of an effort to save neighboring Prospect Park, Kimberly Crest was offered to the “people of Redlands” by the owner, Mary Kimberly Shirk. The house and gardens are now open to the public for tours as well as weddings and private events. The gardens are open to the public free of charge and the interior of the house serves as a museum offering guided tours. The estate is also available for weddings, retreats and private events on Saturdays and on weekdays with advanced scheduling.

In 1963 Kimberly Crest was donated to the people of the City of Redlands by Mary Kimberly-Shirk, daughter of J. When John Alfred and Helen Cheney Kimberly and John Alfred Kimberly purchased the estate in 1905, they purchased additional land to total the 6 ¼ acres that remain today. Mrs. Kimberly began adding the Italian Renaissance Gardens with the assistance of their son-in-law prominent architect G. The first 3 ½ acres were purchased for $3,000 by Mrs. Cornelia Hill. She chose the site at the top of the hill for her new home, and had the grounds completed by horticulturalist Franz P. Hosp. The original grounds included a small orange grove to the north and a fountain directly in front of the house.

Mrs. Hill proceeded to build another, less-castle-like house elsewhere in Redlands. Where Do We Park?
It was designed by the Dennis and Farwell architectural firm and was inspired by a French castle the original owner, Mrs. Cornelia Hill, visited on a trip to Europe. At 7,000 square feet, the structure qualifies as a petite chateau. Prior to the conversion to a museum, the mansion served as one of the filming locations for the 1981 movie Hell Night, starring Linda Blair. In the film, tunnels were depicted, but the house and the estate have no such feature.
Entry inside the house can only be accessed if a group tour or a grand entrance are added on. In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to match a Federal grant to purchase Prospect Park (a 39-acre botanical park east of and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands. To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised – and the incentive worked, with the park being acquired in 1968. This French château-style Victorian mansion is a registered California Historical Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It seems Mrs. Shirk had a strong sense of community and purpose. Before her passing, she challenged the city of Redlands to find the cash to purchase the land around the estate and turn it into botanical gardens for the citizens to enjoy.

Alfred Kimberly, who is also a legacy to 19th-century industrialism and entrepreneurship in the form of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation.
