The building’s design looks simple but elegant, with a rectangular layout and just two stories topped with a flat balustraded roof. The south side was designed as the front facade, and features a loggia with Ionic columns on the first floor, which overlooks Greenwich Park. The open colonnades that connect the house with the annexes were built much later, in 1807, to designs by Daniel Alexander.

Jones, who had been made Surveyor of the King’s Works in September 1615, was commissioned to build a house for her, though it had not got far when she died in 1619. The building, such as it was, was then given to Prince Charles, and when he became king, his wife Queen Henrietta Maria asked Jones to complete the house, which he did between 1629 and 1640. And fifty magnificent works of art will be loaned by some of the great museums, galleries and collections of Britain.

The house reopened after refurbishment of the galleries and the famous tulip stairs in time to celebrate its 400th anniversary in 2016. Wright’s work is designed specifically to occupy its position in the Queen’s House. The claim to be the first Palladian building, like that to be the first Renaissance piece of architecture in this country,  is also a bit contentious as it took such a long time to build.
